She’s Insane

Biography

She’s Insane were a power pop and alternative rock band from New Brighton, Christchurch, built around the twin vocal harmonies of sisters Maria Due (vocals, rhythm guitar) and Tasha French (vocals, drums), with Pete Thomson on guitar and Adam Gallagher on bass. The band began in the early 1990s covering The Pixies, The Breeders, Veruca Salt, Stiff Little Fingers, The Clean, Butthole Surfers, Toy Love, and the Buzzcocks — a broad sweep of American indie noise pop, British punk, and New Zealand underground.Shortly before the Christchurch Rejuvenation Battle of the Bands in late 1997, the band began writing original material. They won the contest, beating 60 other entries — the year after The Feelers had taken the 1996 title. The win marked their transition from covers act to original band and raised their profile considerably within the Christchurch scene. By 1998 they had become the most requested act on RDU, the city’s student radio station. The self-titled debut album was recorded at Blast Studios in Christchurch and released on Yellow Eye Records (EYE016), collecting 15 tracks that showcased Due and French’s vocal chemistry alongside a guitar-driven sound drawing on The Primitives, The Bangles, Elastica, and Luscious Jackson as much as their harder-edged influences.
A great trashy pop voice — melodic vocal front-line reminiscent of 1960s girl groups. Nic Bollinger, The Listener
Infectious and fresh energy with strong vocals that maintain alternative cool — a tremendous sense of fun. Jennifer Scott, NZ Musician
