Beat Atlas Records

Biography

Defunct Christchurch-based label formed by Mike Richardson and Karl Schasching who put out a lathe cut 7″ single by the duo’s group Up Periscope as their first release.

Notable acts on the label include Barnard’s Star, who released 2 lathe cut 7″ singles and a CD EP of terrific electronic-infused shoegaze, plus Hawaii Five-0, an excellent organ-driven indie-pop group that served as the debut of Annabel Alpers (who later found fame as Bachelorette).

The label also put out a handful of releases from Dunedin trio Lesley Speaker – formed by Peter Hobbs (who went on to front the popular Dunedin group Kitset) plus a live recording of US group Luna.

Eventually Schaschling and his Up Periscope bandmates returned to London (Richardson had previously been replaced by Pete Lewis) and the label went dormant.

In 2010, label founder Karl Schasching started releasing material from his London-based punk group Limozone on the label.
