Live Music: Lucky Dragons at SOFA

SOFA Gallery
SOFA Gallery, Christchurch

An improvised, participatory show at SOFA Gallery with Californian duo Lucky Dragons. The big open space made for an ideal venue — and the crowd was in the right spirit for what followed.

Shannon

Shannon opened up with a vocal performance that moved between looped harmonics and a capella singing, coaxing the crowd into adding their own voices. Warm and disarming — exactly the right way to set the tone for an evening built around participation.

Lucky Dragons

Lucky Dragons used an array of improvised sound techniques: high-gain mic’ing of pebbles, and most memorably a light/touch-sensor synthesiser device that they passed through the crowd, turning the audience’s physical contact with one another into music. It was a genuinely fun and inventive way to work — part performance, part experiment, part communal game.

The crowd

One of those shows where the people in the room were as much the subject as the performers. The SOFA Gallery space lent itself perfectly to this kind of loose, exploratory performance.
