FLASHBACK to March 2007 — a midweek Wednesday night at the Dux de Lux in Christchurch, and three acts worth dragging yourself out for. The Undercurrents opened with a set that was all restraint and texture — unhurried and mellow, their layered sound filling the room with quiet authority. The Sneaks followed with the kind of sharp, hook-laden pop that made them impossible not to love, tearing through fan favourites including ‘Godzilla’, ‘Kuzai Heart U Girl’, ‘You Suck!’ and ‘Hot Amyl Nitrate’ while the crowd jumped and grinned in equal measure — with an album reportedly on the way, the excitement was palpable. Voom closed the night, a band who could always be counted on for a couple of genuine crowd-pleasers; their tighter new lineup gave ‘Be Your Boy’ a real crispness.
