History
Double Happy opened in December 2006 as an upscale bar and club at 182 Cashel Street, the heart of Christchurch’s late-night strip. Operated by the same team behind the neighbouring Concrete Club, it occupied a larger space and pitched itself as one of New Zealand’s premier club venues, with a capacity of 420.
The programming centred on electronic music — drum and bass, dubstep, hip hop and soul — with a roster that mixed local talent with significant international bookings. UK drum and bass heavyweights Doc Scott, Marcus Intalex, Benga, Big Bud, Calibre, and Aquasky all played there, alongside New Zealand acts including Minuit, Shapeshifter DJs, P Money, Pacific Heights, Joe Dukie and DJ Fitchie of Fat Freddy’s Drop, and Christchurch-based DJs and MCs from the city’s hip hop and drum and bass scene. The venue also hosted the 2010 Christchurch Fetish Ball among its varied event calendar.
Since opening in December 2006, Double Happy has hosted some of Aotearoa’s finest talents including Minuit, Shapeshifter DJs and P Digsss, P Money, Dick Johnson, Urban Notion, Pacific Heights, Joe Dukie and DJ Fitchie of Fat Freddies, Soane, The Nomad, Funknslocuts and Kurnel MC, DJ Sticky Fingaz, Partido and Soul Providah, DJ Pots, Cern, Dose, Teknik, Ritchie Rich, Wise, Pig Out, Roger Perry, Shannon Aston, Danny Boy, Aragorn, Riki… and we have thrown in some internationals including Doc Scott and Marcus Intalex, Benga, Big Bud, Joshua Iz, Diverted, Calibre, Aquasky… with more locals and internationals to come!
Venue profile, Eventfinda
The February 2011 earthquake and the ongoing aftershock sequence ended Double Happy’s run, as with many businesses in Christchurch’s central city cordon. The building was subsequently demolished as part of the post-earthquake clearances of the Cashel Street precinct.
