Heka

Heka is an experimental electronic project featuring Stephen Kilroy and Heath Te Au. The duo released their debut album Last Spiritual Gas Station Before The End Of Civilisation in 2004 through Arclife Records, marking the project’s sole entry in the recorded catalogue to date.

Heath Te Au is one of the more prolific figures in the New Zealand independent music scene, with connections spanning a wide range of acts including Cloudboy, Mink, The Puddle, Suka, and The Dark Beaks. His involvement with Heka places the project within a broader lineage of experimental and alternative music that has characterised the New Zealand underground over several decades.

Stephen Kilroy, the other half of Heka, is also associated with Chug, further grounding the project in the circles of New Zealand independent music. The combination of Kilroy and Te Au’s respective backgrounds suggests a project shaped by diverse influences drawn from across the local scene.

Last Spiritual Gas Station Before The End Of Civilisation was released on CD through Arclife Records in 2004. The album’s title evokes a sense of dark humour and existential unease that sets it apart within the New Zealand independent music landscape of that era.

Despite a limited public profile, Heka represents a meeting point between two experienced musicians whose collective work across numerous New Zealand bands has contributed significantly to the country’s alternative and indie music culture.
