Cobweb Iris

Biography

Cobweb Iris was a one-off 7″ Peter King lathe cut release recorded in the small seaside villages of Port Chalmers and Purakanui (both near Dunedin) in August-October 1993 by a who’s-who of New Zealand underground musicians – mainly Michael Morley and Bruce Russell of The Dead C along with Kim Pieters, Peter Stapleton and Danny Butt of Flies Inside the Sun and Alastair Galbraith, along with one-time Mink vocalist Margot Schweigman.

The songs on the EP vary from downbeat folkie strumming to a noisy maelstrom of feedback and free-noise clarinet.

‘Forms’ was released in 2 editions in 1994 – both on Morley’s own Precious Metal label, as a co-release with the unknown Sturgeon label (presumably Danny Butt’s imprint). The first edition features a dark, hand-painted cover in an edition of 50 (only 20 available publicly) and a 2nd run of an additional 70 in a more colourful cover.

Peter Stapleton passed away in March, 2020.
