Wunderbar

Biography

The Wunderbar is a two-room bar settled into the hillside of central Lyttelton; purchased above the London-street facing supermarket and with a great view out over the port.

Originally opened in 1991 by Jörg Schwarz; who built the quirky interior. Replete with kitschy toy-doll lampshades, plush velvet performing curtains and carpeted walls, a glittering ceiling made up of old electronic components and hand-made mirror balls and a barely functional DJ booth styled after the Berlin Wall.

The entrance room has a fairly lengthy bar and pool table area and opens out onto a great balcony. This main bar room is connected via a short hallway to the main performance space, which has a 2nd small bar (which is seldom opened), a good sized dance floor, flanked by seated tables and a reasonably elevated stage with an ancient and rundown PA system.
