Pine

Biography

Pine were a Christchurch indie pop trio who drew on the sparse, jangly sounds of the British and New Zealand underground — Wire, the Verlaines and the Chills among their touchstones — to craft something quietly distinctive. Formed in the early 2000s, the band released two full-length albums on Arch Hill Recordings before calling it quits, leaving behind a small but admired body of work.

Their debut album Long Player (2002) established a template of interlocking guitars, measured tempos and understated melodicism. Akira Sunrise followed in 2004, refining the formula with slightly warmer production. The band toured the United States, United Kingdom and Japan in 2003, playing CBGBs in New York and the Summerstage festival in Central Park — a remarkable international reach for a small Christchurch act. The Twelve Hour Collision EP (2007) was their final release.
