It’s been a busy few weeks behind the scenes at thebigcity.co.nz — here’s a quick rundown of what’s new.
Artist profiles — a steady stream of new and updated posts
Over the past month we’ve published and substantially updated 18 artist profiles, spanning a wide sweep of the Canterbury and New Zealand music scenes — from Lawrence Arabia and Pumice to Supergroove, This Kind of Punishment, Ghost Club, Seth Frightening and many more. Each profile includes a full biography, discography, member credits, and links to Discogs, AudioCulture, Bandcamp and beyond.
And that’s just the start — we have 88 more draft profiles in the pipeline, scheduled for release through to August 2026. Expect a new post every day (weekdays at 8pm, with bonus weekend slots at 1pm), covering artists across every letter of the alphabet.
New feature: Musician Index
We’ve added a Musician Index — a single searchable page listing every musician mentioned across the site, complete with the bands they’ve played in. It’s a handy way to trace the connections between the Canterbury scene’s many overlapping projects. You’ll find it under the Resources menu.
New feature: thebigcity.co.nz Radio!
The one we’re most excited about: thebigcity.co.nz: Radio! — a streaming playlist built entirely from Bandcamp embeds of the artists we’ve recently profiled on the site.
Hit play, browse the playlist, shuffle, and set it to auto-advance every few minutes. The playlist updates automatically each evening as new artist profiles go live, so there’s always something fresh. It’s a great way to discover (or rediscover) some of the best music to come out of New Zealand.
