Ryan McPhun and the Ruby Suns

Excellent quirky pop from Brunettes side-men Ryan McPhun (guitar, keys and vocals) and James Milne (drums and backing vocals) – also both in the Milne-led Reduction Agents. Flanked by Amee Robinson (keyboards, saxophone, melodica), Mark Stebben (bass), Gareth Shute (guitars, glockenspiel) and Harry Cundy (trumpet, percussion, tape echo) the 6-piece are a slick well-versed group, with group harmonies and stacks of good songs.

Bic Runga

Formerly Christchurch and now Paris based vocalist with a delicate folky pop-rock sound. Possibly New Zealand’s most popular vocalist (outside of opera-teen Hayley Westernra), Runga started out playing acoustic ballads as Love Soup with now Heavy Jones Trio vocalist/guitarist Kelly Hogan, and quickly garnished attention thanks to the Smoke-Free Rock-Quest, and a string of popular and minimal videos on the fledgling Cry TV regional music channel (now defunct).

Runga has since gone from strength to strength, signing with Columbia Records, touring the world and scoring some high-profile soundtrack slots in the United States, and breaking the 100,000 record sales barrier for second album Beautiful Collision. Though I prefer Runga’s initial, low-key and under-produced singles, she has retained an aura and understated grace through-out her career.

Recently, the band shot a music video for the song This World Is Dead from the upcoming album. The song features Mark Unseen from the legendary hardcore punk rock band The Unseen, when he took time out in New Zealand between the end of the Vans Warped Tour and The Unseen’s headlining tour of Europe.
With the release date of the album still to be announced, the band are currently working on plans for several international tours commencing next February, to encompass Canada, The United States and Europe.
The video for This World Is Dead will be released on the band’s MySpace page within the next week, so keep your eyes peeled!

The Rainy Days

starting life as a schlocky, punky ensemble, the rainy days recorded a couple of eps in a decade – with a huge number of contributors flowing in and out of the band, before settling on a more melodic configuration in the early 00s. their excellent ‘spungomummagummabyllybeef+microchips’ anthologies compiles a substantial amount of unreleased material from their earlier period, and is a fine place to start with such an eclectic band.
