Popular Christchurch rock outfit originally featuring Paul Hirst, Dylan Nicol-Hawes and Andrew Danks. Culminating a strong live following over many years in the mid to late 90s before finally releasing their debut in 2002, ‘Orkid then slipped out of the limelight, as musicians associated with the band relocated.
They played a brand of loud-quiet dynamic based rock with the odd guitar flourish.
The group changed quite dramatically after the departure of Hirst, for a while the remaining duo of Danks and Nicol-Hawes played as a low-key and vaguely hippy folk group, before Japanese drummer-vocalist Mika Takagi joined, infusing some upbeat rock’n’roll back into the group.
In 2007-08 ‘Orkid were a solid 3-piece rock group (Takagi’s drumming is exceptional and driving), with Nicol-Hawes guitar work taking on an offbeat reggae approach. After the group disbanded, Nicol-Hawes joined Christchurch-based group Lupas Lunar.
